SEMINARI INTERNACIONAL I REUNIÓ ANUAL DE L'EQUIP DE TREBALL.

Palma, 21-22 de novembre de 2022.

The project "Teaching practice and the prevention of early dropout from vocational training: empirical approach and intervention proposal" aims to analyze the teaching styles and teaching practices of secondary vocational education teachers and their influence on the improvement of student's academic performance and the prevention of early dropout from vocational training.

The educational levels of the Spanish population reflect a strong polarization characterized by an insufficient number of people with intermediate studies and an excess of people with lower educational levels. The Spanish early dropout rate from education and training (ATEF) in 2022 stood at 13.3% (Eurostat, 2022), a rate higher than the European Union average (9.7%) (Eurostat, 2022) and the target set by the Europe 2020 Strategy. In the case of Vocational Training, dropout rates at these educational levels are high; according to the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training (2022), 41.7% of VET students and 30.7% of FPGM students leave the degree and educational system 4 years after enrollment.

In this context, the purpose of the project is to deepen the knowledge of the teaching practices of VET and FPGM teachers and their relationship with academic results to design, implement and evaluate actions that promote the generalization of educational practices for the prevention of dropout and improvement of academic performance. The results will allow us to provide evidence, strategies, and instruments that contribute to the improvement of knowledge about teaching styles and pedagogical practices of teachers and their relationship with the academic performance of students, as well as the transfer of tools and successful pedagogical practices for the prevention and reduction of early dropout at these educational levels.

The project is coordinated by the Education and Citizenship Research Group of the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) and by the Laboratory for Research and Innovation in Vocational Training (LRIFP) of the UIB; It is formed by a multidisciplinary team that includes researchers from various departments of the UIB; along with an international advisory board that includes experts from university research but also from the practice and management of VET. The seminar that we present has the mission to make visible the actions designed and developed by the participating schools towards the prevention of dropout in Basic Vocational Training and Vocational Training, one of the key pillars of the project, while providing a space for dialogue and exchange between the project team, the advisory council and the pilot centers that are participating in the project.

The objectives of the Seminar are as follows:

  1. To contrast with international and national experts the experience of the pilot schemes that are being developed within the framework of the project.
  2. To get to know the pilot centers in situ and the actions they are developing for the improvement of the teaching practice.
  3. To share with the community of VET teachers in our autonomous community the theory of self-determination as a theoretical and practical model on which to work for the prevention of dropout and academic success.

The seminar has two parts, one of internal work by the project team and the project's advisory team; and the other part consists of sharing with the vocational training teaching community the theory of self-determination to provide teachers with a theoretical and practical basis on which to continue working on the prevention of dropout.

It is worth mentioning the essential participation of teachers from educational centers in this project, which allows us to guide the research from the perspective of action research, thus giving way to a study aimed at supporting the teaching staff in the promotion of educational success and the prevention of dropout in vocational training.

Finally, it is important to highlight the clear transfer aspect of this project to other centers, of which this seminar is a first step.
